UK: EPSRC Funded Ph.D. Research Studentship Opportunity
Applications are invited for an EPRSC funded studentship to start in October 2009 (or earlier as negotiable) at the Centre for Theoretical and Computational Neuroscience at the University of Plymouth, UK.
We are searching for a highly qualified and motivated student to
complement
our existing brain-technology team shared between the School of
Computing and
Math and the School of Psychology at the University of Plymouth (UoP).
The
student will be closely integrated into the UK - COLAMN project which
comprises world-leading researchers throughout the United Kingdom and
the
European Union (http://colamn.plymouth.ac.uk/colamn-project). S/he will
contribute to the further development and exploitation of a large-scale
computational model of the neo-cortex, which has been implemented at
UoP over
the previous years. The student will explore the selforganisation of
cognitive representations in the model by training it on visual and
auditory
real-world data (movies/music). This will require systematic tests of
various
learning rules on a computer cluster and is expected to feed into VLSI
chip
design in immediate collaboration with project partners.
The studentship will be full-time for three years at the standard
EPSRC rate.
Candidates should have a first or upper second class honours degree in
an
area related to Computational Neuroscience (Computer Science, Math,
Physics,
Electrical Engineering, Neuroscience, Psychology). Applicants with a
relevant
MSc or MRes would be particularly welcome. The successful candidate will
receive a stipend of approximately GBP13,290 per annum and tuition
fees for a
Home/EU student (approximately GBP3,390). The position is open to UK
citizens
and EU citizens with appropriate qualification who have been resident or
studied in the UK for three years.
