Experimental investigation and modelling of granular material and powder behaviour

3-year duration. Stipend £11,500 pa (UK), £8,000 pa (non-UK). Tuition fees paid in full. Applications from overseas candidates welcomed.

Interest in granular and powder behaviour is growing at a rapid rate due to both an industrial need to understand flows and stress propagation and because of the exciting challenges that they present to scientists. At Loughborough University, we have a group of international standing focussed on the use and development of state-of-the-art experimental and modelling techniques to study granular material behaviour.

Applications are invited for a PhD position expected to commence October 2009. A number of projects are available, including 1. the modelling of powder flow behaviour (in shear cells, and vibrated and gas-fluidised beds) and subsequent experimental validation using techniques such as positron emission particle tracking, magnetic resonance imaging and high speed photography and 2. the development of optical techniques for observing slow flow and stress propagation in granular and powder packings.
