Description:
The Institute for Advanced Computing Applications and Technologies and
the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of
Illinois Urbana-Champaign USA has one Postdoctoral Research Associate
position available. Responsibilities include assigned research tasks in
high-performance computing and calibration and imaging algorithm development
for the Square Kilometer Array (SKA), a next-generation radio telescope with
petascale data and compute rates, currently funded internationally for
design and development over the period 2008-2011
(http://www.skatelescope.org).
US efforts in research and development for
the SKA are funded within the US SKA Technology Development Project (TDP).
UIUC leads the calibration and processing research group (CPG) within the
TDP. The CPG is a collaboration of ten North American institutions and
universities, tasked with evaluating and demonstrating the cost and
feasibility of calibration and processing challenges for the SKA. This
position is intended to contribute to CPG research with a specific focus on
high-performance computing and algorithms at extreme scales
Required Education and Experience:
1.. Ph.D. (or equivalent doctoral degree) in Astronomy, Physics,
Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or a closely-related
field required. Alternative degree fields will be considered if accompanied
by equivalent experience (depending on nature and depth of experience as it
relates to current NCSA business needs).
2.. Expertise in high-performance scientific computing or advanced
computational science and engineering is required.
3.. Experience in radio interferometry or inverse image formation
problems is an advantage.
This position at NCSA is a 12-month, 100%-time appointment with
regular University benefits. Funding for this position is available for up
to three years and is subject to the yearly reappointment process.
